Falconry

Experience the thrill and appreciate the skill of the ancient art of falconry, in the beautiful and dramatic countryside of Devon and Cornwall. Harris Hawks, Falcons and Owls; the agility and speed of these birds is breathtaking. A truly memorable sight to be experienced and enjoyed.

Days can be organised in conjunction with other country pursuits or on a personal basis, tailored to meet your exact requirements. Individuals, couples and groups are welcome.

The days are structured with the emphasis very much being client interaction. You will handle, feed and fly the birds.

There are a number of options available. These can either be bespoke or combined with other pursuits available.

• The Falconry Introduction - A  2 hour 'hands on' introduction on the art of falconry. Meet the birds, learn of their nature and history; of their husbandry; and fly the birds 'to the glove'. A great start and insight for all ages.

• The Falconry Experience - Half day and full day experiences are for those looking for a further insight into falconry and to enjoy and learn more about these magnificent birds of prey. For the first part of the day you will learn about the training and flying of the birds and the general husbandry required to keep them healthy and interested. The second part of the experience will be flying the birds in the wild, in their own environment and habitat.

• Hunting Days - From October through to the end of February you can enjoy the thrill of the hunt. Following introductions to your Falconer for the day and the birds you will be flying, you will make acquaintances with your 'furry flushers'  - the dogs and the ferrets! You will then be shown how to handle the birds in a manner that is both safe and pleasant for you and the birds. Following some light refreshments, you will then be taken to the hunting grounds, where you will hunt with the birds, the quarry generally being rabbits, pheasants and pigeons, and fly the birds 'to the glove', experiencing their incredible ability and agility and doing what comes naturally - Hunting for their food!

To make the most of your day(s), we can combine any of the falconry pursuits with archery, clay pigeon shooting, horse riding or fly fishing? Whether experienced or not. Tuition is available. Just let us know preferences and number of participants and we will do the rest.

If your Falconry Experience is during your stay at West Venn, as always, we can organise breakfasts, packed lunches and evening meals at a local village pub or restaurant to suit.
